Wiley College in Marshall aims to fill its charter bus with food

Wiley College students in Marshall aim to donate 15,000 meals to the East Texas Food Bank Friday as part of the third annual Fill the Bus Food Drive.

Students in the criminal justice honor society, Alpha Phi Sigma, are putting on the four-hour event to gather nonperishable food and monetary donations for the food bank.

Wiley College hosts world-class debaters from Australia

Wiley College debate team members Benjamin Turner and Nathan Leal will participate in an exhibition debate against Monash University.

Wiley College’s storied debate team is hosting a two-on-two exhibition match Friday against three-time world champions Monash University from Melbourne, Australia. It’s the first time that Wiley has debated an international team. The students will take up the issue of economic inequality and how it can be remedied, according to Christopher Medina, Wiley’s director of forensics.

“Having the Australians with a completely different perspective on economic equality as well as poverty and hunger is going to be an amazing conversation," Medina said.

Wiley College senior Ailey Pope will debate Harvard University on the topic of guns in school.

Wiley College in Marshall, Texas, will debate Harvard University on Friday, Jan. 25, in an exhibition match on Wiley’s campus. The debate is a nod to the 2007 Denzel Washington film “The Great Debaters” that depicted the success of Wiley’s debate team in 1935. In the film, Wiley takes down Harvard.

Wiley College student returns to Africa to forge partnerships

Wiley College senior Chad Mossman of Houston is preparing for a three-week mission trip to Nairobi, Kenya. He's developing an internship that will create more connections between non-governmental organizations in rural Kenya and Wiley, a historically black college in Marshall, Texas.
