Children’s booksellers are off to a positive start in holiday sales. Publishers Weekly conducted a survey of 24 booksellers nationwide and found double-digit sales gains for the period beginning Black Friday.

LSU Shreveport education professor Candi Bagley says children will get a glut of toys, but a book can bring added value.

"Books are such a lasting gift," Bagley said. "Kids can keep them for years and years. A lot of parents will put special books away as keepsakes for later on."

Bagley suggests penning an inscription to personalize the book.

Dell Jones of Avondale and his 10 family members are riding out Hurricane Isaac at the American Red Cross shelter on the LSU Shreveport campus. It's the same shelter his family went to during Katrina. Shelter manager Steve Beyer says he has a good number of volunteers who are working on a rotated schedule. The LSUS shelter can accommodate 700 evacuees. Less than 100 people are currently staying there.

Prospective students of LSU Shreveport have until Wednesday to apply to the school to be considered for the Free Ride scholarship program for fall semester. The incentive that launched in November covers tuition at LSUS, when combined with the state-funded merit scholarship known as TOPS. LSUS officials say about half of the students admitted for fall have been offered a free ride scholarship, and the program could be credited for stabilizing enrollment.

LaPREP

More than 500 middle school students from Shreveport, Mansfield and Keithville have completed the LaPREP summer program since it began in the early 1990s. LSU Shreveport math professor Carlos Spaht founded the program to encourage young people to go to college and major in math and science. Spaht says none of the LaPREP participants has dropped out of high school. LaPREP's graduation ceremony begins at 1 p.m. at the LSUS University Center Theater.
