Wideman continues to attract world-class pianists to Shreveport

Lester Senter Wilson says over the years of planning the Wideman Competition the young musicians have become like children to her.

The 64th Wideman Piano Competition begins Friday, Dec. 5, and runs through the weekend at Centenary College’s Hurley School of Music. The competition features 43 young pianists from around the world. The competition’s executive director Lester Senter Wilson says it’s events like this one that will help promote classical music.

Shreveport remembers native son Van Cliburn

Shreveport is paying tribute to its native son Van Cliburn, the legendary pianist died Feb. 27 at his Fort Worth home. His early career was nurtured by the Shreveport Symphony community, and he never forgot that, according to Lester Senter Wilson. She’s been executive director of the Wideman International Piano Competition in Shreveport for 30 years. She said Cliburn played five times with the Shreveport Symphony, including a performance in 1972 when he celebrated the orchestra’s 25th anniversary. People packed the hall.
