Julian Lage

Airs Thursday, November 19, at 8 p.m. Guitarist, composer and arranger Julian Lage is often categorized as a jazz musician, though his music is also rooted in traditional and acoustic forms. In addition to five prior SMF performances both solo and with a variety of collaborators including Mark O'Connor, Martin Taylor, Mike Marshall and Casey Driessen, Julian Lage has served on the faculty of SMF's Acoustic Music Seminar since its inception in 2012.

Airs Thursday, May 7, at 8 p.m. Every spring, sixteen talented young string players, all under the age of 22, travel to Savannah for a groundbreaking mentorship program called the Acoustic Music Seminar. Led by acclaimed mandolinist Mike Marshall, the participants receive six days of hands-on instruction in playing, songwriting and ensemble work. Past instructors have included Julian Lage, Casey Driessen, Avi Avital, Bela Fleck, Chris Thile, Abigail Washburn, Zakir Hussain, Bruce Molsky, Mike Block, David Finckel, David Grisman, Tony Trischka and many others.

Airs Thursday, February 12, at 8 p.m. When guitarists Julian Lage and Chris Eldridge formed a collaborative effort using early 20th century Martin Guitars to explore the worlds of improvisation and composition, no one should have been surprised. With Lage's background in jazz and improvised musical styles, and Eldridge's relationship with bluegrass and his membership in the acclaimed band Punch Brothers, the duo was able to blend technical mastery of their instruments with some beautiful vocals, and have a lot of fun playing their hearts out. In this episode, we listen to the duo performing at the Charles H. Morris Center during the 2014 Savannah Music Festival.

Airs Thursday, October 23 at 8 p.m. In 2014, SMF hosted the US premiere of a piece that we co-commissioned by composer David Bruce. Entitled "The Given Note" (after a poem by Irish poet Seamus Haney), this Savannah performance of the piece featured Daniel Hope on violin, Julian Lage on guitar, Rodney Jordan on bass, Mike Block on cello and Jose Franch Ballaster on clarinet. Tune in to hear The Given Note and two pieces performed by Julian Lage and Rodney Jordan during the opening set of the concert.

Airs Thursday, August 28 at 8 p.m. The late Chet Atkins called Martin Taylor "one of the greatest and most impressive guitar players in the world." Pat Metheny stated that Mr. Taylor "is one of the most awesome solo guitar players in the history of the instrument." Although completely self-taught, guitarist and composer Martin Taylor continues to enjoy a remarkable musical career that has already spanned five decades. In this episode, we listen to highlights from a 2013 Savannah Music Festival solo concert given by Martin Taylor, on a double-bill with guitarist Julian Lage.
