Jack DeJohnette

Airs Tuesday, August 6 at 9 p.m.  The world lost Abbey Lincoln (Aminata Moseka) in 2010, but her enduring legacy as jazz artist is still very much with us.   To commemorate what would have been her 83rd birthday on August 6th of this year, Peabody Award Winning Producer Jim Luce teams up with Abbey’s pianist Marc Cary to produce a moving tribute. Marc Cary’s new release, “For the Love of Abbey” (on Motema Records) interprets Abbey’s music in moving and emotional renditions on solo piano.  We also hear many tunes from Abbey’s earlier recordings. In her lifetime she recorded with many jazz luminaries that included Max Roach, Bobby Hutcherson, Kenny Baron, Jack Dejohnette, Steve Coleman, Archie Shepp, Pat Metheny, Dizzy Gillespie, Victor Lewis and more.

Airs Tuesday, February 19 at 9 p.m. The great drummer turns 70 during the week following the 2012 Newport Jazz Festival, but he's certainly not going quietly into retirement age. Lately, he's been leading a quintet which combines a brilliant saxophonist fluent in South Asian music (Rudresh Mahanthappa), an electric guitarist known for microtonal experiments (Dave Fiuczynski) and the combination of keyboards (George Colligan) and acoustic bass guitar (Jerome Harris).
