LA Public Square: Preventable - HIV & AIDS in Louisiana

Airs Sunday, August 4 at 6 p.m.  According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Baton Rouge and New Orleans rank 2nd and 3rd among America’s largest metropolitan areas for the rate of new HIV diagnoses. For AIDS cases, Baton Rouge and New Orleans rank 1st and 5th. Nearly one-third of new cases for both diseases are among women, and more than three-quarters of new diagnoses are among blacks. So how is Louisiana confronting this health issue? Who is most at-risk? Do new testing methods exacerbate the problem? Is the solution just more funding and education? Where is the line drawn between individual responsibility and government intervention? Louisiana Public Square searches for answers to these issues and more.

Cleveland Orchestra

The Cleveland Orchestra Live

Airs Saturday, August 3, at 12 noon. This week on the Cleveland Orchestra we open a new season of broadcasts. Franz Welser-Moest will lead the orchestra in Hindemith's Kammermusik No. 1 and Berlioz's  Symphonie fantastique. Oboist Frank Rosenwein will also be featured in the Oboe Concerto in D by Richard Strauss. Join us for a new season of broadcasts from the Cleveland Orchestra this Saturday at noon on Red River Radio.

Airs Friday, August 2 at 9 p.m. This week on the Caravan we'll turn the clock back a bit to 1967, 1969 and 1971 with live cuts from Janis Joplin, the Mammas & Pappas and Steppenwolf plus blues from Erin Mckeown, Buddy Flett, and Moby Grape. We'll also have new cuts from Andrew Bird and Caroline Fenn and some cool tracks from Lamb Chop and David Darling. Then in the concert hour we'll hear two from SXSW with the Choir of Young Believers and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and on Be Quiet and Play The Music we'll wander to Another Green World.

Savannah Music Festival: Swinging and Wailing

Airs Thursday, August 1 at 8 p.m.  This week on the Savannah Music Festival, jazz virtuosos Marcus Roberts, Wycliffe Gordon, John Fadis, Jason Marsallis, Shawn Jones, and Jeff Clayton take the stage for some of the finest solo performances. They say the best improvised jazz sounds composed and the best composed music sounds improvised. These artists take the concept to the extreme. This concert is from the 2012 festival.
