The WFMT Radio Network is pleased to continue the American Opera Series with three productions from LA Opera’s season.

In just a quarter-century of existence, LA Opera has become the fourth-largest opera company in the United States and “stands out as a newly important force in American opera,” according to Mark Swed in the Los Angeles Times. The broadcast series includes commentary from two of opera’s biggest names: general director Plácido Domingo and music director James Conlon. Airs Saturday, August 16 at 12 noon This week the LA Opera brings us Benjamin Britten's Billy Budd with Liam Bonner as Billy and Richard Croft as Captain Vere, Greer Grimsley as John Claggart, Anthony Michaels-Moore as Mr. Redburn, Daniel Sumegi as Mr. Flint, and Patrick Blackwell as Lieutenant Ratcliffe. James Conlon condicts the LA Opera orchestra and Chorus in this production.

Airs Saturday, August 9 at 12 noon. Mozart's delightful world filled with magic and melody will be presented this week on the LA Opera with Janai Brugger in the role of Pamina, Lawrence Brownlee as Tamino, and Erika Miklósa as the Queen of the Night. This performance also features Evan Boyer as Sarastro, Rodion Pogossov as Papageno and Amanda Woodbury as Papagena. James Conlon lead the LA Opera Orchstra and Chorus for this performance.

Airs Saturday, August 2 at 12 noon. This week the LA Opera presents the sultry, love fueled opera Carmen by George Bizet featuring Patricia Bardon as Carmen, with Brandon Jovanovich as Don José, Pretty Yende as Micaëla, Ildebrando D’Arcangelo as Escamillo, with Valentin Anikin as Zuniga, Daniel Armstrong in the role of Moralès, Hae Ji Chang as Frasquita, and Cassandra Zoé Velasco as Mercédès. Plácido Domingo leads the LA Opera Orchestra and Chorus in this production.

Airs Saturday, July 26 at 12 noon. In honor of Verdi’s 200th birthday, LA Opera presents a new production of the crowning glory of the composer’s magnificent career, his comic masterpiece Falstaff. LA Opera Music Director James Conlon, praised internationally for his mastery of Verdi, conducts this unabashed celebration of Merrie Olde England’s lusty days and bawdy nights, starring Italian baritone Roberto Frontali.
