Airs Thursday, October 2 at 7 p.m.  Music and Liturgy for Yom Kipur, (The Day of Atonement) Sung by The Western Wind with Guest Cantors, Narrated by Leonard Nimoy. Leonard Nimoy and The Western Wind Vocal Ensemble explore the rich and profound musical and spiritual traditions of the Jewish High Holy Days. The Birthday of the World presents some of the most inspiring music of the Jewish Liturgy performed by The Western Wind, guest singers and four internationally renowned cantors. Musical selections include Avinu Malkeinu, Kol Nidre, El Maleh Rachamim, traditional chant and composed works by Sulzer, Secunda and Nowakowsky. A narration performed by actor Leonard Nimoy elucidates the important prayers and illuminates the deeper structure of the liturgy.

Passover Story

The Passover Story with the Western Winds

Airs Monday, April 14 at 1 p.m. Renowned actor Theodore Bikel and The Western Wind, America's pre-eminent vocal ensemble, present 25 eclectic selections that, along with an inspiring narration, serve as musical documentary of Passover. Music includes Hebrew folk melodies, classical European liturgical music, ancient Sephardic chants, Klezmer-style improvisations, and traditional songs from the Seder. This program is designed for listeners of any religious background and provides a good introduction to a holiday whose lessons of redemption and faith are universal. "The music is an eclectic compilation of songs and compositions from many sources reflecting the tremendous diversity of Jewish cultures. Selections include Hebrew folk melodies, classical European liturgical music, ancient Sephardic chants, Klezmer-style improvisations, and traditional songs from the Seder, including the 'adopted' song of slavery, the Negro spiritual "Go Down Moses"--all sung with the superb musicianship and zest that are hallmarks of Western Wind performances."

The Western Winds Vocal Ensemble

Airs Thursday, December 8 at 2:00 p.m A celebration by The Western Wind performing Ladino songs of Spanish Jews, Yiddish melodies of Eastern Europe and modern Israeli tunes. Narrated by Leonard Nimoy and sung by the acclaimed vocal sextet The Western Wind Vocal Ensemble, "Chanukah in Story and Song" is a unique holiday program created especially for public radio listeners. This delightfully engaging program presents 25 eclectic selections, from the Ladino songs of the Spanish Jews and Yiddish melodies of Eastern Europe to modern Israeli tunes and the ensemble's original version of "I Have a Little Dreydle."  The ensemble performs a cappella as well as with instrumental accompaniment. The narration, written by Rabbi Gerald Skolnik, sheds new light on the holiday's customs and rituals. Listeners of all ages will hum the tunes after enjoying this wonderful program.
