Commentator Gary Joiner honors Army Lt. Eugene Augustus Woodruff who gave his life to Shreveport and died on Sept. 30, 1873, just two months shy of his 32nd birthday, as he cared for residents stricken with Yellow Fever.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is allocating $2.4 million on top of congressional spending this year for dredging the Red River. The J. Bennett Johnston Waterway Navigation Project received the additional funds for operation and maintenance. The head of the Red River Waterway Commission, Ken Guidry, says the funding is critical to keep industries based at the Port of Caddo-Bossier and the Alexandria Port.
Close to 50 paddlefish are once again swimming around in Caddo Lake. Scientists and researchers from a half dozen federal and private agencies are collaborating on an effort to evaluate the health of the Caddo Lake watershed, and the dinosaur-era paddlefish will be a leading indicator.
