Endangered woodpeckers moved from Kisatchie National Forest

A total of 32 red cockaded woodpeckers have been moved from the Kisatchie National Forest's Calcasieu District to a reserve in south-central Arkansas and the Winn District in the Kisatchie. The aim is to beef up the population in places where numbers are dwindling. Wildlife biologist Johnny Fryer says fellow biologists from neighboring states have worked on this cooperative effort to help the endangered woodpeckers for more than 20 years.

LSU AgCenter overhauls football fields

The LSU AgCenter is working with high school coaches across the state to improve the condition of football fields. Turfgrass specialist Ron Strahan says many playing fields are in rough shape. He creates a "cookbook recipe" and month-by-month plan for improving the turf as part of the Field of Excellence program.

Paddling trails open on Caddo Lake

Saturday's first Earth Day Regatta will celebrate the opening of six paddling trails on the Texas side of Caddo Lake. Half of the trails begin in Uncertain, Texas. Registration begins at Caddo Lake State Park, and lunch will be served at Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge.

Bassmaster competitor remembers his Natchitoches roots

Keith Poche of Pike Road, Ala., hails from Natchitoches, La. He'll compete in 12 bass fishing competitions this year. It's his first time to qualify for the Bassmaster Classic.

Bassmaster Classic fisherman Keith Poche fondly recalls fishing on Cane River Lake and feels like a hometown favorite in the Classic field that includes anglers from 22 states. 


The competition gets under way Feb. 24.

Collegiate angler prepares for Bassmaster Classic
