A Michigan Tech emeritus professor of history will give a presentation Monday about the early history of Shreveport Water Works and the city’s struggle to supply water prior to building a municipally-owned system. Terry Reynolds, a native of El Dorado, will address the South Arkansas Historical Foundation.

South Arkansas historian presents lecture on prohibition

Southern Arkansas University history professor Ben Johnson will present the lecture "Making Arkansas Dry: The War Against Drink in Arkansas" on March 12 at the South Arkansas Community College Lecture Auditorium beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Eighty years after the repeal of prohibition, author and historian Ben Johnson will present a program on Arkansas’ history of regulating alcohol manufacturing, sales and consumption. Johnson is a history professor at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia, and author of “John Barleycorn Must Die: The War Against Drink in Arkansas.” Johnson said the tug-of-war over alcohol in dry counties still prevails.
