Shriners Hospital for Children in Shreveport cites record growth, on firm financial ground

Shriners Hospital displays its Christmas wish list at the door with every item fulfilled. A hospital spokesman says a new wish list is going up this week.

Shriners Hospital for Children in Shreveport is on track to complete the year caring for a record number of patients in its 92-year history. It also marks the first time that it has four, full-time pediatric orthopedic surgeons on staff. Interim chief of staff Dr. John Fox says the entire Shriners organization feels the growth spurt with about 3,200 admitted patients this year.

Renowned Shreveport physician is still writing the book on genetic disorders

Dr. Harold Chen's renowned genetics atlas is well worn at Shriners Hospital for Children in Shreveport. Chen, 79, is working on new chapters for the next edition.

A Shreveport pediatrician who wrote the reference book on genetic disorders will turn 80 this summer. Dr. Harold Chen can barely carry his 2,200-page "Atlas of Genetic Diagnosis and Counseling." The second edition was published last year, divided into three volumes. Chen drops it on a desk with a thud.
