ArtBreak celebrates 30 years of promoting arts education

Shreveport Regional Arts Council executive director Pam Atchison has ushered ArtBreak through 30 years of promoting arts education in schools.

A student art festival that began 30 years ago at the Municipal Auditorium as a political statement to support art education in Louisiana public schools is bigger than ever today. Organizers of ArtBreak held a press conference Monday to herald the seven-day festival that is expected to attract 50,000 families over one weekend.

Artist builds skateboarder-friendly sculpture in Shreveport Common

Skateboarding icon Steve Olson is in the midst of a six-week artist residency with the Shreveport Regional Arts Council. The Los Angeles-based artist is crafting a "skateable sculpture" that will be installed in downtown’s Shreveport Common.

“It’s going to be unbelievable, and you’re going to have the first 'skateable sculpture' in Shreveport of this kind," Olson said, his mad scientist hair at home in a gritty downtown Shreveport studio where the sculpture is taking shape.

Shreveport's Bucket List Chalkboard inspires profound thoughts

The Bucket List Chalkboard in Shreveport captures the dreams of people who step up to the art installation and contribute their beliefs.

At the close of 2013, it’s a good time to check in on the Bucket List Chalkboard in Shreveport. The giant chalkboard with a bold yellow frame has three words across the top: “Before I die…” People step up on a platform, pick their chalk color, and write or draw what they feel. 

Plain Dealing, La., artist Megan Davis-Taylor designed and built the chalkboard through a grant from the Shreveport Regional Arts Council. It’s been traveling around Shreveport Common since September.

Art critic series aims to raise profile of Shreveport-area artists

The Shreveport Regional Arts Council has received a $30,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to bring in a San Diego-based art critic to judge the works of local artists in an open exhibition. The art critic series is a two-year grant that will touch 300 visual artists.
