Health study: Arkansas and Louisiana lack defenses against 'superbugs'

Arkansas and Louisiana are ill-prepared to detect, diagnose and respond to threats like Ebola and outbreaks of infectious diseases, according to a report released Thursday by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

The report, “Outbreaks: Protecting Americans from Infectious Diseases,” found that Arkansas scored the lowest of all, two out of 10 on key indicators related to preventing and responding to antibiotic-resistant “superbugs.”

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana organizes Shreveport enrollment event

Louisiana’s largest health insurer, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana, expects hundreds of people to turn out for an information fair Saturday in Shreveport. Organizers aim to help people better understand their options in the federal healthcare marketplace, according to James Bustillo, regional marketing director for Blue Cross. Dozens of Blue Cross staff will work the event, Bustillo says, and are qualified to answer questions about available subsidies and insurance plans.

Louisiana tops the nation on number of obese adults

Louisiana is tied for the fattest state in the nation, with an adult obesity rate of almost 35 percent. Mississippi falls behind by a fraction of a percentage, and Arkansas is very close behind. (Arkansas was the only state this year where obesity had a statistical increase.)
