Gary Borders: Public radio legend Garrison Keillor's timing is impeccable

When “A Prairie Home Companion” first went on the air, Richard Nixon was a month away from being run out of the Oval Office. “Annie’s Song” by John Denver topped the pop charts. The Ford Pinto and the Plymouth Valiant were the best-selling cars in America, and the median price of a home in America was $37,400. It was July 1974, and Garrison Keillor and his troupe took the stage for about a dozen people in the audience in Saint Paul, Minn.

Also with us, singer Andra Suchy, the Royal Academy of Radio Actors; Tim Russell, Sue Scott, and sound effects man Fred Newman, The Guy's All-Star Shoe Band, and the latest News from Lake Wobegon.

Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame guitarist James Burton joins Garrison Keillor on "A Prairie Home Companion" at Municipal Auditorium. James has played on countless number-one recordings and created some of the most influential guitar riffs in popular music. Elvis Costello says that James Burton is one of few the players who musicians almost always call ‘legendary.’ Pete Townsend says that James is probably the most important guitar player in American music.
