The New Orleans-based Louisiana District Export Council will hold two days of training beginning Tuesday for Louisiana businesspeople who want to export their company’s products or services and build business outside the U.S.

J. Bennett Johnston Waterway Commission

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is allocating $2.4 million on top of congressional spending this year for dredging the Red River. The J. Bennett Johnston Waterway Navigation Project received the additional funds for operation and maintenance. The head of the Red River Waterway Commission, Ken Guidry, says the funding is critical to keep industries based at the Port of Caddo-Bossier and the Alexandria Port.

Benteler Steel/Tube has started construction on its hot rolling steel tube mill at the Port of Caddo-Bossier. Gov. Bobby Jindal joined Benteler officials for a groundbreaking ceremony yesterday to formally kick-off the project that is slated to cost $975 million. It will be the Germany company's first factory in the United States.

Paper bag maker Ronpak marked the opening of its new manufacturing facility and corporate headquarters at a ceremony yesterday at the Port of Caddo-Bossier. Over the past two years, the privately held company moved its headquarters from New Jersey and built a $16.8 million manufacturing facility at the Port in order to be near a Dallas customer. It makes carry-out bags and food wrappings for the fast food industry.

CEO Ronald Sedley said he currently has 109 employees in Shreveport, and he plans to more than double his workforce over the next several years.
