America's Music Festivals: Norfolk Chamber

Airs Monday, June 18 at 11:00 a.m.  The Norfolk Chamber Music Festival has a long history of bringing world-class music to the charming town of Norfolk, Connecticut. Ellen Battell, generous benefactor and wife of a man with family ties to Yale School of Music, left her estate to a private trust that ensures that it be used for Yale University’s summer music school. The festival has grown since its humble beginnings in the 1930s and now features 30 concerts in just nine weeks. True to its roots, the festival employs the best professional musicians and offers a chance for young musicians to learn and practice their craft.

Savannah Music Festival: Brazilian Duets

Airs Thursday, May 14 at 8:00 p.m. The music of Brazil encompasses a wealth of styles influenced by African, European, and Amerindian forms.  After 500 years of history, Brazilian music has developed many unique and original styles such as choro, samba, and bossa nova, all of which have melded with other musical genres from around the world. In this episode, we listen to music performed by Toots Thielemans, Oscar Castro-Neves, Hamilton de Holanda, and Gabriel Grossi, among others.

America's Music Festivals: Festival Mozaic

Airs Monday, June 11 at 11:00 a.m.  Located in what has been called “the happiest city in America,” Festival Mozaic has been bringing high quality classical music to San Luis Obispo every summer since 1971. One of the longest running music festivals on the west coast, Festival Mozaic has kept every season fresh through its unique programming, which spans over five centuries of musical repertoire and includes everything from orchestral and chamber favorites to world music and jazz. Scott Yoo, the festival’s director, says the short 11 day festival is “a real opportunity to zero in on one side of music and really explore.”

Janis Joplin: Pearl

Airs, Friday, June 1 at 8 p.m. When Janis Joplin knew what she wanted, there was little that could stop her. With her music, she pushed and experimented until it felt just right. Her fourth and final album – Pearl – showed Janis at the top of her game, working hard with a new band and new ways to use her voice. This one-hour radio special explores Janis’ final years and the making of Pearl from her sister and author Laura Joplin, road manager John Byrne Cooke, Pearl producer, the late Paul Rothchild, and author Holly George Warren.
