An unhappy customer called me the other day. He had every reason to be displeased, because we had given him poor service. His approach was to use foul language, which I endured. I figured he would eventually settle down and then maybe we could reason together.

Newspaperman Gary Borders has compiled a list of things that were once essential to producing a newspaper, but the computer came along and made them all obsolete. These relics -- like the circular slide rule -- still linger in the back of desk drawers or are stashed away in storage closets that were once darkrooms.

Just ahead of Texas Independence Day, commentator Gary Borders introduces us to history buff and renegade newspaperman Sam Malone, who edited The Rambler in San Augustine. The Rambler ended its run in 1988. Today, The Sabine County Reporter and Rambler continues weekly circulation. It's published in neighboring Hemphill, Texas.
