Airs Tuesday, December 20 at 9:00 p.m. Not much in jazz combines the churchy moan and shaking hip quite like a Hammond B-3 organ. And Joey DeFrancesco is one of its modern masters — he grew up around the instrument since birth (his father is also a jazz organist), cut his first major-label album in his teens and has been honing his innate swing instincts since then. He's 40 now, and will celebrate with an eponymous album in September; at Newport, he brings a soulful trio to the Harbor Stage. Recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival on Saturday, August 6, 2011.
Airs Tuesday, December 6 at 9:00 p.m. Trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire is only 29; his bandmates hover around that age too. But not only are they among the most sought-after and most distinctive players of their generation; they've been working together as a band for years already. Their collaboration gave rise in 2011 to 'The Heart Emerges Glistening,' a svelte and darkly modernistic CD highlighted by Akinmusire's clarion solos. The quintet performs from Newport's Harbor Stage on August 6, 2011.
