'Smart city' broadband pitch targets Natchitoches and Lafayette

Robert Bell, co-founder of the New York-based Intelligent Community Forum, will mentor Natchitoches and Lafayette on embracing broadband technology through master classes.

A New York think tank that advises communities on how to use technology to grow their economies will conduct two workshops in Natchitoches and Lafayette. The Intelligent Community Forum will be consulting with state agencies, politicians and business leaders on how to maximize broadband use. Robert Bell, co-founder of the Intelligent Community Forum, said Louisiana lags behind in adopting broadband, and his organization aims to change that through these workshops.

'Cane River Murals' music suite picked up by London label

Northwestern State University director of bands will conduct the Royal Northern College of Music Wind Orchestra for a studio recording of "Cane River Murals."

Yarn bombers target Natchitoches telephone pole

Art students at Northwestern State University have installed another yarn bomb in Natchitoches. NSU assistant professor of art Leslie Gruesbeck said the students made a proposal to the mayor to get permission to cover a telephone pole with a brightly-colored crocheted wrap, like a sweater. This is the sixth yarn bomb her students have completed. She said several fiber classes crocheted different pieces for the latest installation in Tricentennial Park.

"It's kind of a holiday-themed, patchwork sweater for a telephone pole in the middle of downtown Natchitoches," Gruesbeck said.

Natchitoches prepares for 'The Green Agora' venture

The Green Agora would transform a Natchitoches warehouse into a green building.

A Natchitoches, La.-based businesswoman aims to open a business incubator in the town, which will include a marketplace for fresh produce and cottage industries. Donna Isaacs launched a fundraising campaign this week to renovate a warehouse in Natchitoches. It would be home to what she calls “The Green Agora.”

"It's based on the concept of the Greek public square and the center of the community," Isaacs said. "Not only were ideas and individuals nurtured, but so were businesses."
