Such was the case of NEA Jazz Master Cedar Walton, who was born and grew up in Dallas, and used his mother's guidance as a stepping stone to play with Kenny Dorham, JJ Johnson, Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane and many others before leading his own group.
