Civil Air Patrol's Texas Wing set for first disaster drill in Nacogdoches

The Texas Wing of the Civil Air Patrol will undergo its semiannual evaluation this weekend by the U.S. Air Force. For the first time, this exercise will be carried out at the Texas Wing’s new headquarters in Nacogdoches, Texas. Capt. David McCollum of Spring, Texas, said the Air Force will evaluate the Texas Wing’s search and rescue response and a how it functions in a natural disaster scenario. He estimates about 70 members of the Civil Air Patrol will participate in the mock drill.

Judy McDonald & Kathleen Kennedy Townsend

Airs Sunday, April 7 at 6 p.m. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend was a Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow at Stephen F. Austin State University in February, 2013. As part of her visit she sat down with Judy McDonald before a live audience in the Baker Pattillo Student Center. The conversation includes insight into growing up a Kennedy as the eldest child of Robert Kennedy and niece of John F. Kennedy. They also discuss her work as a lieutenant governor in Maryland and former U.S. deputy assistant attorney general as well as her work on issues including public safety and improving access to higher education as well as the Police Corps, a program granting higher education scholarships to those who pledged to work as police officers.

     Judy McDonald is a former president and CEO of the Nacogdoches Economic Development Corporation and she served on the Nacogdoches City Commission for 18 years, becoming the first female mayor of Nacogdoches. She says "Townsend's experiences during one of America's most turbulent times give her an interesting perspective on both historical events and current issues."

Texas' Civil Air Patrol feels at home in Nacogdoches

Col. Brooks Cima is Wing Commander of the Civil Apri Patrol, Texas Wing.

The Civil Air Patrol’s Texas Wing will formally open its new state headquarters and training center on March 16 in Nacogdoches, Texas. It’s located in the former Texas Army National Guard Armory next to the A.L. Mangham Regional Airport. Wing Commander Brooks Cima described the move to Nacogdoches as a "happy accident" when the armory came up for bid.

City of Nacogdoches reaps return on centralized surplus program

The city of Nacogdoches' purchasing manager Gary Baisden is in charge of ridding departments of surplus equipment. That effort has generated more than $1 million for the city since the centralized surplus program began in 2009.

The city of Nacogdoches has pocketed more than $1 million since it centralized its effort to get rid of surplus equipment and vehicles. Gary Baisden, the city's purchasing and risk manager, took over the surplus effort in June 2009. Since then, he said, he’s sent more than 175 items to auction, including a parcel of land. Baisden said he posts the items to the website GovDeals. Buyers have come from all over, even as far away as Canada.
