Airs Monday, April 23 at 9:00 p.m. Blues: A hour of the sacred and the secular at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival 2011, featuring the harmonica of Charlie Musselwhite, the blazing guitar of Alvin 'Youngblood' Heart, Ruthie Foster's blues and gospel and many others (Robert Cray, Mahalia Jackson Tribute).
Airs Monday, April 16 at 9:00 p.m. Jazz with a modern vibe on one side with some far reaching orchestrations on the other. John Boutte performs a Leonard Cohen song. Nicholas Payton stretches his sound into yet another direction. Leroy Jones performs a song heralding the spirit of Carnival in New Orleans. The Delfeayo Marsalis Uptown Orchestra takes on the compositions of Armstrong as well as Ellington. And finally, the Mingus Big Band turns a song originally only on piano into a giant work.
Airs Monday, April 9 at 9:00 p.m. Some of the magical moments that WWOZ recorded during the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in 2011. We spend the whole hour in the Jazz tent listening to ensembles visiting the city (Stefon Harris, Anat Cohen) as well as some hard-hitting local musicians (Baritone Bliss, Derek Douget, Stanton Moore Trio, New Orleans Klezmer) who take it to a place only possible in New Orleans.
