For the first time, women make up the majority of homeless people seeking emergency shelter. Hiway 80 Rescue Mission in Longview is preparing to expand its women's and family shelter.

A Longview, Texas, homeless shelter is preparing to build a larger women’s and family shelter. The Hiway 80 Rescue Mission has seen a spike in homeless women over the past seven months. It’s currently housing 65 women and children, up from 25 at this time last year, according to associate director Rusty Fennell.
“We’re over bed capacity already. We’ve been over bed capacity for awhile,” Fennell said.
City of Longview Sanitation Division employee Cris Hudson has advanced to the international competition hosted by the Solid Waste Association of North America, called Road-E-O. Hudson will test her skills in operating a garbage truck in Lexington, Ky., this weekend. This is the first time the city of Longview has had an employee qualify for this level of competition.
The organizing board of the Great Texas Balloon Race is working with LeTourneau University researchers to calculate the economic impact of the event on East Texas. Race founder Bill Bussey, a Longview dentist, said nearly 500 volunteers helped to put on this year's race. The Great Texas Balloon Race will host the U.S. National Hot Air Balloon Championship in Longview for the next two years. Bussey says the board is considering bidding for the 2016 World Hot Air Balloon Championship.
The Junior League of Longview will host an open house at 4:30 p.m. to unveil its newly renovated building, which includes its volunteer-run shop, The Bargain Box. The Junior League's unique partnership with Neiman Marcus department store chain allows it to purchase merchandise from Neiman Marcus' Longview distribution center and resell it at the Bargain Box to benefit Junior League community projects.
