A Longview elementary school making marked strides in academic improvement accepted another accolade Thursday with the opening of its Ben Carson Reading Room.

Ware Elementary is one of six schools in Texas to have one. They must contain at least 500 books and be open to students at all times. The Texas Spine and Joint Hospital made it possible through a $15,000 donation, according to Ware Elementary principal Sarah Sheppard.

A year has passed since our family became engulfed in a horrific tragedy. My father-in-law, Harris Teel, was stabbed in the heart two days before Thanksgiving while sitting in a waiting room at the Good Shepherd day surgery center in Longview. Nurse Gail Sandidge died on the scene, and three others were wounded. Mr. Teel — who was 82 and in good health at the time — died nine days later.

High school students in Longview are making air.

Pine Tree High School students are producing a weekly, hour-long radio program that’s been broadcast since September on several radio stations in East Texas. The project is called Bluebeard Radio. They pair music from a specific era with student essays that delve into events from that time period, according to Pine Tree High School audio visual instructor Allen Morris.

An 18-week program that helps people climb out of poverty begins Tuesday in Longview. The class, “Getting Ahead in a Just Gettin’ By World,” is offered through the city’s Partners in Prevention program. According to program manager Holly Fuller, it doesn’t take a cookie cutter approach to life changes.

“It’s more about really evaluating one’s life, circumstances, situations and resources, and then developing a plan as to how that person might want it to look in the future. It's about building a future story," Fuller said.

Great Texas Balloon Race Facebook

A week of hot air balloon events will draw dozens of racers and enthusiasts to East Texas this week. The colorful balloons are being spotted over Longview today.

The events include the 36th Great Texas Balloon Race and, in its second year in Longview, the U.S. National Hot Air Balloon Championship.  According to the Longview News Journal, 76 pilots are set to compete in both races this week and that will mean an infusion of tourism dollars for East Texas cities.
