WWII veteran draws visitors to Belcher, La. memorial

W.H. Greene, 87, of Belcher, La., reflects on the hand-to-hand combat he saw while stationed in the Philippines as a staff sergeant in World War II. A decade ago, he erected a memorial park in honor of all war veterans outside his home.

National plant societies convene in Shreveport, look to future

Directors of plant societies from around the country will convene at the American Rose Center in Shreveport for a weekend summit on how to preserve their organizations. The American Rose Society is hosting the meeting that will discuss thorny issues about how these groups are to stay relevant when their member rolls continue to decline. American Rose Society executive director Jeff Ware hopes to exchange ideas with his counterparts who represent groups like the camellia, orchid, day lily and iris.

Bossier City to host digital arts festival in September

The Bossier Arts Council announced it will launch DigiFest South, a digital arts festival and technology career fair set for Sept. 6-9 at the Bossier Civic Center. Organizers aim to draw thousands of people to the event that will bring together digital media artists and tech industry professionals working in areas like animation and digital effects.

Giant salvinia growth under control on northwest La. lakes

Fisheries biologist manager Evan Thames says the invasive aquatic weed giant salvinia is not growing out of control. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is adhering to a four-day per week chemical spray schedule to keep the plant at bay.
