Shreveport amateur astronomers prepare for Venus transit

The Shreveport-Bossier Astronomical Society is sponsoring a solar party to witness the transit of Venus from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Ralph A. Worley Observatory, eight miles south of the LSU Shreveport campus.

Northwestern State dedicates Loft Theatre

Jack Wann is the retired artistic director at Northwestern State University, and returns each year to direct summer theater productions.

Northwestern State University has named its Loft Theatre in honor of former artistic director Jack Wann. The 76-year-old professor emeritus is credited for building NSU's undergraduate theater program.

Cyber camps slated to spread to universities around U.S.

The Cyber Discovery Camp model was developed by the Cyber Innovation Center in Bossier City. The center's GB Cazes says dozens of high school students and their teachers are being mentored this week by Louisiana Tech University professors at a camp on the Ruston campus. He says the cyber camp concept will be rolled out at other universities, including the University of Baltimore next month.

W.H. Greene, 87, of Belcher, La., reflects on the hand-to-hand combat he saw while stationed in the Philippines as a staff sergeant in World War II. A decade ago, he erected a memorial park in honor of all war veterans outside his home.

National plant societies convene in Shreveport, look to future

Directors of plant societies from around the country will convene at the American Rose Center in Shreveport for a weekend summit on how to preserve their organizations. The American Rose Society is hosting the meeting that will discuss thorny issues about how these groups are to stay relevant when their member rolls continue to decline. American Rose Society executive director Jeff Ware hopes to exchange ideas with his counterparts who represent groups like the camellia, orchid, day lily and iris.
