The Shreveport Downtown Development Authority will receive $250,000 from the BP fund to promote Gulf Coast tourism and the seafood industries impacted by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster. Out of the five states eligible to apply for grants, 43 organizations in Louisiana received funding in the first round of the program.
Liz Swaine, executive director of the Shreveport Downtown Development Authority, said when coastal Louisiana tourism is compromised it has a ripple effect across the state.
Centenary College in Shreveport affirmed its commitment to the Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program at a Veterans Day program. Yellow Ribbon schools help students avoid up to all out-of-pocket tuition and fees associated with education programs that may exceed the Post 9/11 GI Bill tuition benefit. Centenary president David Rowe said post 9/11 veterans and their dependents will not pay tuition to attend the college.
The FBI Citizens’ Academy chapter in Shreveport-Bossier is promoting child’s safety programs on Veterans Day. The FBI-trained academy alumni will distribute materials about FBI community programs at the Louisiana State Fair on Sunday, Nov. 11, from 10 a.m. to dusk. Gina Starnes, vice president of the FBI Citizens’ Academy Shreveport chapter, says her group will hand out hundreds of child ID kits that involve fingerprinting and DNA swabs.
“The kits are kept at home in a safe place,” Starnes said. “Hopefully [parents] will never need it, but they will have it right away.”
