China's booming economy has one Shreveport architecture firm expanding its horizon, taking on large commercial design projects a world away in Beijing and Chengdu. Mike McSwain says he hopes to open a satellite office in Chengdu to help manage the workflow of Chinese projects. His firm is currently designing a senior citizen housing project in Beijing and a research park in Chengdu.
A ceremony today will mark the completion of grant-funded renovations totaling $400,000 at Holy Angels, a residential facility in Shreveport housing 184 people with developmental disabilities. CEO Laurie Boswell says Holy Angels' 1960s-era buildings are in need of many repairs and upgrades. The ceremony is set for 2 p.m.
The Center for a Livable World at Stephen F. Austin State in Nacogdoches, Texas, will gain input from a renowned peace activist. Arun Gandhi, the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, will serve as a senior fellow at the center.
TV game show host celebrity Bob Barker visited the chimpanzee sanctuary in Keithville, La., Chimp Haven, to herald the opening of a new habitat made possible through his $500,000 gift from his animal rights charity. Barker rescued five elderly chimps, infected with HIV and hepatitis, from a shuttered sanctuary in Texas.
Wiley College senior Chad Mossman of Houston is preparing for a three-week mission trip to Nairobi, Kenya. He's developing an internship that will create more connections between non-governmental organizations in rural Kenya and Wiley, a historically black college in Marshall, Texas.
