Savannah Music Festival Live: Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba

The arid, landlocked nation of Mali is a cultural colossus. Its contemporary music serves as a rich and varied reminder of American music's West African roots.

Shreveporter continues effort to improve the life of West African girl

Tia Landrum (right) of Shreveport visits with Adom Grace in Ghana after coming to her rescue and getting her medical help.

One year ago this month, college student Tia Landrum of Shreveport encountered a life altering situation while on an internship in Ghana. She saw an emaciated girl who was lying helpless in a marketplace, and exposed to the West African sun.

“She weighed a little over 17 kilograms (37 pounds) when we picked her up, and she was about five feet tall," Landrum said.

Shreveporter does humanitarian medical relief in Ghana

Tia Landrum will spend 30 days in Ghana for a medical internship. The Centenary College biology and chemistry double major also works as a massage therapist in Shreveport.

Centenary College student Tia Landrum, 23, leaves for Western Africa next week  for a medical internship with Global Brigades, a student-led nonprofit health organization. Landrum says her lifelong dream has been to do humanitarian medical relief work around the globe. She plans to continue volunteer work in Haiti in December.
