Former Hotel Marshall will become hub for graduate education

A postcard from 1934 hails The Marshall hotel.

East Texas Baptist University has received a major real estate donation. The iconic former Marshall Hotel will be turned into a center for graduate and professional programs. The eight-story hotel built in 1929 was saved from the wrecking ball by two Marshall families who’ve been renovating the building for a decade in partnership with the city. Judge Richard Anderson, one of the partners in the public-private venture, said the building was recently appraised at $3.2 million. He said giving ETBU downtown real estate will open up new opportunities for the university.

College freshmen still waiting on verbal scholarship promise to East Texas Baptist University

College plans for 16 high school graduates from New London, Texas, are in flux after a promise of a free-ride at East Texas Baptist University has not happened. West Rusk High School seniors were told in May that a Houston area man would pay their way to the school if they chose to enroll. 

The private, Christian university in Marshall, Texas, did not know of the offer by filmmaker Nicholas Sturghill until a media report surfaced. Spokesman Mike Midkiff said Friday that ETBU’s president met with the families late last week to encourage them to get their financial aid in order.

East Texas universities to build new facilities

LeTourneau University in Longview breaks ground today on a $14 million student center. Meanwhile, East Texas Baptist University in neighboring Marshall is preparing to build a new residential facility and parking garage, a $23 million dollar project.
