Metropolitan Opera: Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore

Airs Saturday, February 9 at 12 noon.  The 2012-13 Metropolitan Opera Radio Broadcast season continues with a live broadcast of Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore. Soprano Anna Netrebko stars as the bewitching Adina, opposite tenor Matthew Polenzani as the lovelorn Nemorino, baritone Mariusz Kwiecien as the swaggering Sergeant Belcore, and bass-baritone Erwin Schrott as Doctor Dulcamara, the quack whose phony potions nevertheless lead to true love. Maurizio Benini conducts this performance of Bartlett Sher’s new production, which premiered on opening night of the current Met season. L’Elisir d’Amore will be heard live over the Toll Brothers-Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network at 12 p.m. CT on Saturday, February 9.

Metropolitan Opera: Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda

Airs Saturday, January 19 at 12 noon.  The 2012-13 Metropolitan Opera Radio Broadcast season continues with the live network broadcast premiere of Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda. Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato stars in the title role of Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, opposite South African soprano Elza van den Heever, who makes her network debut as Mary’s formidable rival, Queen Elizabeth I of England. Tenor Matthew Polenzani is Leicester, the nobleman caught between the two women; bass Matthew Rose is Lord Talbot, Mary’s custodian; and baritone Joshua Hopkins is Elizabeth’s advisor Lord Cecil. Bel canto specialist Maurizio Benini conducts this performance of David McVicar’s critically acclaimed Met premiere production. Maria Stuarda will be heard live over the Toll Brothers-Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network at 12 p.m. CT on Saturday, January 19.

Lyric Opera of Chicago: Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor

Airs Saturday, May 19 at 12:00 p.m.  “Both heaven and earth have abandoned me.”  Lucia    In Scotland, Lucia and Edgardo are breathlessly, desperately in love. But their two clans are bitter rivals, so Lucia’s villainous brother Enrico sets out to kill his young sister’s romance. And he deploys every devious device he can muster, including lies, forgery, and finally the false revelation of Edgardo’s infidelity. Little wonder that Lucia is mentally crushed and destroyed, driven to madness and murder before she dies of a broken heart.
