America's Music Festivals: The Eastern Music Festival

Airs Monday, April 2 at 11:00 a.m.  For fifty years, the Eastern Music Festival has been committed to bringing high quality performances of classical music to Greensboro, North Carolina. The festival attracts more than 60,000 audience members a year, who flock to the city for performances by classical masters, such as Yo-Yo Ma, Peter Serkin and Sarah Chang. In 2011, the festival celebrated its fiftieth year in style with five weeks of over 100 musical events, including daily performances open to the public.

Metropolitan Opera: Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore

Airs Sarurday, March 31 at 12:00 noon. The 2011-12 Metropolitan Opera Radio Broadcast season continues with a live broadcast of Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore. Juan Diego Flórez stars as the simple villager Nemorino, opposite Diana Damrau as the beautiful Adina; Mariusz Kwiecien is Adina’s swaggering suitor, Belcore; and Alessandro Corbelli is the potion-peddling Doctor Dulcamara. Donato Renzetti conducts L’Elisir d’Amore, which will be heard live over the Toll Brothers-Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network at 12 p.m. CT on Saturday, March 31.

Harmonia: Discovering Hildegard

Airs, Sunday, March 25 at 6:00 a.m.  An hour-long program of music, exploring the life and continuing popular appeal of medieval Abbess, composer, and mystic Hildegard von Bingen.  In the past 50 years, we've learned much more about the music of women composers in earlier ages.  One of the most studied, discussed, and performed of these composers is the medieval Abbess and mystic Hildegard von Bingen. On this edition of Harmonia, we'll explore the continuing popularity of Hildegard, and some different approaches to her music. Hosted by Angela Mariani.
