The Cleveland Orchestra Live

Airs Saturday, August 25 at 12:00 noon. Red River Radio is pleased to bring back the Cleveland Orchestra for another superb season of broadcast concerts from the orchestra's home at Severance Hall in Cleveland and from concerts performed around the country and the world. On this week's concert Marin Alsop leads the orchestra in Barber's Symphony No. 1.  She will be joined on stage by violinist Peter Otto for Bernstein's Serenade (after Plato's “Symposium”). The concert concludes with organist Joela Jones as soloist in the Symphony No. 3 in C minor, Opus 78, and “Organ” by Saint-Saens.

Russian Accents: Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky and the Piano

Airs Saturday, August 25 at 3:00 p.m. Join us for Part six of an exploration of the piano music of Rachmaninoff and Stravinsky with commentary by Valery Gergiev, Alexander Toradze, Gianandrea Noseda and Joseph Horowitz. All performances on this program are live. This week we continue our exploration of the piano works of Stravinsky, with his two piano version of the Rite of Spring featuring Genadi Zagor and Edisher Savitski as pianists. Then Stravinsky's Danse sacrale from  featuring Rex Lawson, pianolist (this is a pianola performance).  The program concludes with the Sonata for Two Pianos featuring George Vatchnadze and Genadi Zagor as pianists.

America's Music Festivals: Bang on a Can Music Festival

Airs Monday, August 20 at 11:00 a.m.  Bang on a Can’s Summer Music Festival focuses on new and adventurous contemporary music. For three weeks each summer, performers and composers alike head to the industrial heart of the Berkshires collaborate on, create and perform new music pieces. The festival is hosted at the Massachusetts Musuem of Contemporary Art and culminates with an incredible six hour concert in the museum. Known for its spirit of originality and experimentation, the festival concentrates on developing talented young musicians who are not afraid to play outside the box. This year’s festival included classes in improvisation techniques, an Orchestra of Original Instruments by Mark Stewart and an African dancing and drumming rhythm seminar by Nani Agbeli. Guest faculty over the years has included Steve Reich, Louis Andriessen and Meredith Monk.

On this week's concert Fabio Luisi will lead the orchestra in conductor Richard Strauss' Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks, Opus 28  and Strauss'  Aus Italien, Opus 16. In between pianist Jonathan Biss joines maestro Luisi and Orchestra for Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 17 in G major, K. 453.

Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival

Airs Saturday, August 18 at 2:00 p.m.  Join us for a new season of concerts from the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, celebrating its 40th season as one of the world’s leading performing arts festivals. Artistic director Marc Neikrug and broadcast host Kerry Frumkin will take you through 13 weeks of world class chamber performances. This week pianist Jeremy Denk is featured in Ligeti's Ėtude No. 6, Automne à Varsovie from book one of his Ėtudes for Piano. Then flutist Joshua Smith and clarinetist Todd Levy join Lily Francis, and L.P. How on violins, violist Cynthia Phelps, cellist Ronald Thomas and harpist Yolanda Kondonassis for Maurice Ravel's Introduction and Allegro. The program concludes with Fauré's Piano Quartet No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 15
with pianist Jeremy Denk joined by John Dalley, violin; Cynthia Phelps, viola; and Ronald Thomas, cello.
