Flight school slated to open in Natchitoches

Natchitoches Aviators EAA Chapter 1526

A new flight school opens Aug. 2 at Natchitoches Regional Airport. The Flight Academy of New Orleans will move into the hangar formerly occupied by Northwestern State University's aviation program that closed about a year ago. Stanley Salter, chairman of the Airport Commission, say the arrangement includes a partnership with Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He says China is experiencing an aviation boom and its citizens often seek flight training in the United States. The open house event is from 4 - 6 p.m. at Natchitoches Regional Airport.

Community Trust Bank retrofits 100-year-old building

Ruston, La.-based Community Trust Bank has opened a branch in the former Wray-Dickinson Motor Co. building in downtown Shreveport. Regional president Larry Little says the building conveys a sense of strength and durability, the same qualities the bank upholds. He says Community Trust Bank acted quickly on the 100-year-old property when it went on the market last year. He plans to hang historical photos in the bank lobby.

Shreveport kitchen store owner retires

Karen Durham says she plans to spend more time cooking and entertaining in retirement. She's closing her kitchen store after 23 years in business.

KitchenWorks owner Karen Durham says she's surprised that all of her inventory will be sold by the time she turns 67 next week. She announced her store closure earlier this month. Durham is saying goodbye to longtime customers who stop in to inspect her mostly bare shelves. The former high school teacher went into business with her sister in 1989, inspired by her mother's passion for cooking and a kitchen stocked with high-quality pots and pans.

Maginnis: La. economy stable if lawmakers 'do no harm'

Louisiana political commentator and journalist John Maginnis addressed Shreveport area business leaders about the economic health of the Bayou State. He spoke at an economic outlook conference put on by LSU Shreveport's Center for Business and Economic Research. He said Louisiana is faring OK amid a still sluggish U.S. economy.

A new wedding resource center in Bossier City compiles lists of local vendors for couples who are planning and budgeting for their big day. Kay Loftin, owner of Our Wedding Library, says her resource center is free to brides and based on ones she's visited in California.
