Alexandria organic farm hosts do-it-yourself workshops

Farmers from a certified-organic commercial farm in Alexandria will give answers Saturday to the most frequently asked questions they get from customers. The 4,000-acre Inglewood Plantation is holding workshops throughout the day that will help people learn about how to raise backyard chickens and build raised beds, among other topics. The 2,000-acre Inglewood Farm is all organic, and operating manager Lee Weeks gets lots of questions about how they do things on the farm.

Philanthropy on display during daylong event in Alexandria

Tom Harmeyer, executive director of the Central Louisiana Community Foundation, said the Celebration of Philanthropy focuses on the good things that come out of giving.

More than 300 people representing nonprofit organizations in central Louisiana have gathered in downtown Alexandria to show support for area nonprofits. The seven-hour Celebration of Philanthropy features speakers on gift making and board leadership. Tom Harmeyer, executive director of the Central Louisiana Community Foundation, said it’s important to keep Cenla’s philanthropists investing their dollars into local nonprofits.

"We are trying to make sure people are aware of how worthwhile our local organizations are, and how important it is that we support them,” Harmeyer said.

La. Hostess employees prepare to retool

Bankrupt Hostess Brands is preparing to lay off its workforce of 18,500 employees. In Louisiana, 420 workers are looking toward their next move. The Louisiana Workforce Commission held a series of orientation sessions for the 200 Alexandria-area Hostess employees this week. Rapid Response manager Greg Anders said turnout was much higher than usual.

"We contribute it to the high visibility of the layoff, specifically the national media attention surrounding the layoffs at Hostess Brands," Anders said.

Alexandria Museum of Art receives $100,000 gift

The Alexandria Museum of Art is a cultural draw to downtown Alexandria.

The Central Louisiana Community Foundation will give its Community Impact award to the Alexandria Museum of Art at Dec. 14 ceremony.
