What can machines tell us about being human? This hour of Radiolab, Jad and Robert meet humans and robots who are trying to connect, and blur the line. We talk to the world's most advanced robot, meet a man who fell in love with a chatbot, and argue with the inventor of Furby over whether a toy can ever really be "alive."

America's Music Festivals: Chautauqua Music Festival

Airs Monday, May 7 at 11:00 a.m.  President Teddy Roosevelt once described the programs at Chatauqua Lake as “the most American thing about America.” What began in the early 1870s as an experimental school on the banks of pristine Chautauqua Lake in upstate New York has now blossomed into a 750-acre education center which offers an incredible summer music festival. Music floats over the grounds, coming from the practice cabins where musicians spend seven weeks honing their crafts in preparation for concerts.

Metropolitan Opera: Janáček’s The Makropulos

Airs Saturday, May 5 at 12:00 noon. The 2011-12 Metropolitan Opera Radio Broadcast season comes to a close with a live broadcast of Janáček’s The Makropulos Case, starring Karita Mattila as the enigmatic diva Emilia Marty. This season’s performances—the first at the Met in more than a decade—are conducted by Czech specialist Jiří Bělohlávek and feature Richard Leech as Emilia’s admirer Albert Gregor, Danish baritone Johan Reuter in his Met debut as Gregor’s aristocratic rival, Jaroslav Prus; and Tom Fox as the lawyer Kolenaty.

Jack Johnson and Friends: Best Of Kokua Festival

Airs Friday, May 4 at 9 p.m. Since 2004, Jack Johnson has hosted annual concerts in Hawaii featuring his musician friends to raise money for the Kokua Foundation he and his wife created to support environmental education programs. This one hour radio special features the best, one-of-a-kind collaborations from past festivals. Dave Matthews, Eddie Vedder, G Love and Ozomatli join Jack on his hits and covers.
