Special Programs: Upcoming Community and Cultural Programs

Airs Friday, August 24 at 9:00 p.m.  Johnny Cash made a mark on the world that went well beyond his songs. Musically, spiritually, politically – he was a complex man with qualities that generations have held in high regard. In this one hour radio special, you’ll hear from many of his old friends and new admirers - including Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Sheryl Crow, Shelby Lynne, Rhett Miller, Brandi Carlisle, Amy Lee, Lucinda Williams, Shooter Jennings and Sam Beam. Airs Friday, August 24 at 12:00 noon.  To celebrate Tanglewood's 75th Anniversary, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops, Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, and Tanglewood Festival Chorus will all appear, along with conductors John Williams, Keith Lockhart, David Zinman, and Andris Nelsons;  soloists Yo-Yo Ma, Emanuel Ax, Peter Serkin, James Taylor, and Anne-Sophie Mutter. The program will be wide-ranging and will include works by Tanglewood legends including Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein. Fred Child and Ron Della Chiesa are the co-hosts.

Airs Thursday, August 23 at 8:00 p.m.   Tune in for part one of a two-part special featuring the Savannah Music Festival performance by a piano, guitar and reed trio featuring Dick Hyman, Howard Alden and Ken Peplowski. The term "piano trio" usually refers to to a group comprising a pianist, a double bass player and a drummer. The pianist is generally the leader of these trios, which are usually named after the pianist, such as the Bill Evans Trio or Oscar Peterson Trio. In 1937, however, Nat King Cole formed a piano-guitar-bass trio in Los Angeles, and it became the ensemble format that he would use for the remainder of his life, proving that you didn't need a drum kit to swing.

Program Three: Chuey’s Story
Part Three introduces us to a single community and family. While adaptation to climate change is necessary, it will not be easy. And in the process, there will be winners and losers.

Airs Monday, August 20 at 11:00 a.m.  Bang on a Can’s Summer Music Festival focuses on new and adventurous contemporary music. For three weeks each summer, performers and composers alike head to the industrial heart of the Berkshires collaborate on, create and perform new music pieces. The festival is hosted at the Massachusetts Musuem of Contemporary Art and culminates with an incredible six hour concert in the museum. Known for its spirit of originality and experimentation, the festival concentrates on developing talented young musicians who are not afraid to play outside the box. This year’s festival included classes in improvisation techniques, an Orchestra of Original Instruments by Mark Stewart and an African dancing and drumming rhythm seminar by Nani Agbeli. Guest faculty over the years has included Steve Reich, Louis Andriessen and Meredith Monk.
