Newport Jazz Festival - A New Season Begins in February 2013

The Newport Jazz Festival, The First American Jazz Festival, was founded in 1954, and has been host to numerous legendary performances by iconic historic figures and contemporary geniuses. Historic moments since its inception include performance by Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane and Miles Davis. Referred to as a Mecca of jazz, the event draws thousands of people from all over the world to Newport, Rhode Island, a city which is famed in its spectacular coastal scenery and awe-inspiring architecture. This year NPR Music along with Newark's WBGO, Boston's WGBH have made 18 stellar concert available to Red River Radio for Broadcast. This years line up features:

Newport Jazz Festival: Rudresh Mahanthappa And Samdhi Live

Airs Tuesday, May 7 at 9 p.m. Buoyed by a Guggenheim Fellowship, the alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa made an album in 2008 which integrated his love of South Asian music and funk and hip-hop and electronic music and kitchen sinks. He's finally getting to tour the music of the record Samdhi now, and with guitarist David Gilmore, Rudy Royston on drums and Rich Brown on bass. This concert is electric, literally and figuratively.

Newport Jazz Festival: John Hollenbeck's Claudia Quintet + 1 Live

Airs Tuesday, April 30 at 9 p.m. A powerhouse behind the drum kit, John Hollenbeck is also becoming one of the great composer-bandleaders of the age. After last year's large ensemble show, he returns to Newport with his unusual small group, the Claudia Quintet (and a sixth member on piano). The band's latest release What Is The Beautiful? sets poems by Kenneth Patchen to music; much like the album, vocalists Kurt Elling and Theo Bleckmann stand and deliver on stage.

Newport Jazz Festival: Berklee Global Jazz Live

Airs Tuesday, April 23 at 9 p.m.  Boston's esteemed Berklee College of Music, just up the road from Newport, has produced top jazz musicians for decades. Driven by the leadership of Panamanian pianist Danilo Pérez, the school has expanded its jazz vision internationally, developing an initiative to recruit from and bring on tour around the world. Berklee's current Global Jazz Ambassadors are joined here by professional musician Adam Cruz, whose shimmering 2011 debut album Milestone showed off his talent both in front of the band and behind the drum kit.

Newport Jazz Festival: Pedrito Martinez Group Live

Airs Tuesday, April 16 at 9 p.m. Since he came over from Cuba around the turn of the century, the phenomenally talented percussionist Pedrito Martinez has become the conguero of choice for scores of bands. And most weeks in New York City, you can see him with his own, gigging several nights a week at a Cuban restaurant south of Central Park. The Pedrito Martinez Group places him at the congas and behind a microphone, where he exhibits a certain natural charisma.

Newport Jazz Festival: The Three Cohens Live

Airs Tuesday, April 9 at 9 p.m. Yuval Cohen on saxophone, Anat Cohen on reeds and Avishai Cohen on trumpet. They are all siblings from Israel. They're also among the growing number of terrific jazz musicians from that country; Anat and Avishai have both had bookings for their own bands at Newport in recent years. Naturally, the three Cohens occasionally record and perform together as a band, whose original pieces and arrangements are supported by a rhythm section. It's a family reunion you won't secretly dread. They are joined on stage by Reuben Rogers on bass, Rudy Royston on drums and Aaron Goldberg on piano.
