The WFMT Radio Network is pleased to continue the American Opera Series with three productions from LA Opera’s season.

In just a quarter-century of existence, LA Opera has become the fourth-largest opera company in the United States and “stands out as a newly important force in American opera,” according to Mark Swed in the Los Angeles Times. The broadcast series includes commentary from two of opera’s biggest names: general director Plácido Domingo and music director James Conlon. Experience LA Opera performances recorded recorded live from Los Angeles’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

Airs Saturday, August 1, at 12 noon.  This week the LA Opera explore Figaro unbound in a new production of The Barber of Seville by Gioachino Rossini. Rodion Pogossov stars as Figaro, with René Barbera as Count Almaviva, and Elizabeth DeShong as Rosina. This production also features Alessandro Corbelli as Doctor Bartolo, Kristinn Sigmundsson as Don Basilio, Lucy Schaufer as Berta, and Jonathan Michie as Fiorello. Trevore Ross directs this production and c leads the La Opera Orchestra and Chorus in The Barber of Seville by Gioachino Rossini. Duff Murphy will host.

Airs Saturday, July 25, at 12 noon.  This week from the LA Opera it's a double bill featuring two seemingly disconnected works, Dido and Aeneas By Henry Purcell And Bluebeard’s Castle By Béla Bartók. The common thread? Tune in and find out. Steven Sloan will lead the LA Opera Orchestra and Chorus in Dido and Aeneas staring Paula Murrihy as Dido and Liam Bonner as Aeneas, with Kateryna Kasper as Belinda, John Holiday as the Sorceress, Summer Hassen as Second Lady, G. Thomas Allen as First Witch and Darryl Taylor as Second Witch.

Airs Saturday, July 18, at 12 noon We travel next to Los Angeles for the L.A. Opera on the Air and a production of Giuseppe Verdi's masterpiece La Traviata staring Placido Domingo as Giorgio Germont, Nino Machaidza as Violetta Valery, and Arturo Chacon-Cruz as Alfredo Germont, with Peabody Southwell as Flora Bervoix, Brenton Ryan as Gastone, Daniel Mobbs as Baron Douphol, Daniel Armstrong as Marquis d’Obigny, Soloman Howard as Doctor Grenvil, and Vanessa Becerra in the role of Annina.

Airs Saturday, August 30 at 12 noon. This week the LA Opera presents Jules Massenet's Thais with Nono Machaidze as Thais and Placido Domingo as Athanael. This performance will also feature Paul Groves as Nicias, Valentin Anikin as Palemon, Milena Kitic as Albine, and Hae Ji Chang as Crobyle. Patrick Fournillier leads the LA Opera Orchestra and Chorus.
