The WFMT Radio Network is proud to make the American Opera Series available to our affiliates. The American Opera Series is designed to complement the Metropolitan Opera Broadcasts, filling in the schedule to complete the year. This year the American Opera Series features great performances by the Lyric Opera of Chicago, LA Opera, San Francisco Opera, Glimmerglass Festival, Opera Philadelphia, and more! (see elsewhere in this document for information on each Opera company). The American Opera Series for 2016 will bring distinction to your station’s schedule, and unmatched enjoyment to your listeners. We hope you’ll join us!

Highlights of the American Opera Series include:

  • Join Lyric Opera of Chicago for a fantastic season of Wagner, Mozart, Massenet, and more! Highlights include Berlioz’ epic Les Troyens (June 3), and Tchaikovsky’s lyric masterpiece Eugene Onegin (July 8). Stars of this season include Eric Owens (Das Rheingold), Christine Goerke (Les Troyens), Mariusz Kwiecień (Eugene Onegin), and more!
  • Opera lovers everywhere are familiar with The Barber of Seville (August 12) and the Marriage of Figaro (August 19), but LA Opera brings us the third opera in the trilogy, John Corigliano’s less-frequently-heard 1991 composition The Ghosts of Versailles (August 26). With a fantastic lineup of performers and Maestro James Conlon at the podium, you won’t want to miss these exciting performances!
  • Every season there are fantastic performances by current stars of the Opera world and astounding new Operas from some of the best composers in the field; this season San Francisco Opera brings you both! We’re especially delighted to bring you archival recordings of La Gioconda (September 2) featuring Renata Scotto, and Strauss’ Arabella (October 14) featuring the great Kiri Te Kanawa! Balancing these classic master performances is an exciting new commission for San Francisco Opera: Dream of the Red Chamber (September 30), Bright Sheng’s adaptation of the famous Chinese novel of the same name.

This week The Lyric Opera of Chicago presents Georges Bizet's Carmen starring Anita Rachvelishvili as Carmen and Brandon Jovanovich as Don José, with Eleonora Buratto as Micaëla, Christian Van Horn as Escamillo, and Bradley Smoak as Zuniga. Rob Ashford is our director, Michael Black is Chorus master and the Lyric Opera Orchestra & Chorus are under the direction of Ainars Rubikis.

Airs Saturday, June 24, 2017, at 12 noon. This week The Lyric Opera of Chicago presents Vincenzo Bellini's Norma starring Sondra Radvanovsky as Norma, Russell Thomas as Pollione, Elizabeth DeShong as Adalgisa, and Andrea Silvestrelli as Oroveso. Kevin Newbury directs with Michael Black as chorus master and the Lyric Opera Chorus & Orchestra under the direction of Riccardo Frizza.

Airs Saturday, June 17, 2017, at 12 noon. This week The Lyric Opera of Chicago presents Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's The Magic Flute starring Christiane Karg as Pamina; Matthew Polenzani as Tamino; Adam Plachetka as Papageno; Kathryn Lewek as the Queen of the Night; Christof Fischesser as Sarastro; Diana Newman as Papagena; David Govertsen as the Speaker. Neil Armfield directs with Chorus Master Michael Black and the Lyric Opera Orchestra and Chorus will be conducted by Rory Macdonald.

Airs Saturday, June 10, 2017, at 12 noon. The Lyric Opera of Chicago continues this week with a performance of Jules Massenet's Don Quichotte starring Ferruccio Furlanetto as Don Quichotte, Clémentine Margaine as Dulcinée, and Nicola Alaimo as Sancho. Matthew Ozawa directs, Michael Black is Chorus Master and the Lyric Opera Orchestra & Chorus are under the direction of Sir Andrew Davis. 

Airs Saturday, June 3, 2017, at 12 noon. The Lyric Opera of Chicago continues this week with a performance of Les Troyens by Hector Berlioz starring Christine Goerke as Cassandre; Susan Graham as Didon; Brandon Jovanovich as Énée; Lucas Meachem as Chorèbe; Christian Van Horn as Narbal; and Okka von der Damerau as Anna. The director is Tim Albery, the chorus master is Michael Black, and the Lyric Opera Orchestra and Chorus are conducted by Sir Andrew Davis.
