The Museum of East Texas in Lufkin will hold a panel discussion Saturday that will probe the cultural evolution of African American women in three aspects of life: higher education, politics and religion. Angelina College associate dean Sellestine Hunt will moderate the discussion. She wants to examine how far African American women have come, and acknowledge there are many obstacles today.
“We want the audience to leave appreciating -- and I’m not saying they don’t appreciate -- but have a better appreciation for the struggles that have gone on before, but also, be keenly aware that there are still struggles,” Hunt said.
The discussion is set for Saturday, Feb. 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. It will be held in conjunction with a photography exhibit, “Influential African American Women of East Texas,” by Lufkin native Holly Henderson.
