Metropolitan Opera: Thomas Adès’s The Exterminating Angel

Airs Saturday, April 21, 2018, at 12 noon. The 2017-18 Metropolitan Opera Radio Broadcast season continues with the network broadcast premiere of The Exterminating Angel, the acclaimed opera by Thomas Adès, in a performance from November 18, 2017. The story is based on the classic surrealist film by Luis Buñuel, about guests at an elegant dinner party who mysteriously find themselves unable to leave. Tom Cairns wrote the libretto in collaboration with the composer and directed the production, which marked the opera’s U.S. premiere. Adès conducted, leading a remarkable ensemble cast: soprano Audrey Luna as Leticia Maynar, soprano Amanda Echalaz as Lucia de Nobile, mezzo-soprano Alice Coote as Leonora Palma, mezzo-soprano Christine Rice as Blanca Delgado, countertenor Iestyn Davies as Francisco de Ávila, tenor Joseph Kaiser as Edmundo de Nobile, tenor David Portillo as Eduardo, baritone Rod Gilfry as Alberto Roc, bass-baritone Christian Van Horn as Julio, bass Kevin Burdette as Señor Russell, and bass John Tomlinson as Dr. Carlos Conde. In addition, making their network broadcast debuts are soprano Sally Matthews as Silvia de Ávila, soprano Sophie Bevan as Beatriz, tenor Frédéric Antoun as Raúl Yebenes, and baritone David Adam Moore as Colonel Álvaro Gómez. The Exterminating Angel will be heard over the Toll Brothers-Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network at 12:00 p.m. CT on Saturday, April 21.
