The Metropolitan Opera: Beethoven’s Fidelio

Airs Saturday, April 1, 2017, at 12 noon. Sebastian Weigle returns to the Met to conduct his second Saturday broadcast with the company, Beethoven’s only opera, Fidelio, starring Adrianne Pieczonka as Leonore and Klaus Florian Vogt as Florestan. Fidelio, which was last seen at the Met in 2006, tells the story of Leonore, who disguises herself as a young man named Fidelio in order to free her husband Florestan, a political prisoner. The cast also includes Falk Struckmann as the jailer Rocco; Greer Grimsley as Don Pizarro, the corrupt governor of the prison; Günther Groissböck as Don Fernando; Hanna-Elisabeth Müller in her network broadcast debut as Rocco’s daughter Marzelline; and David Portillo as Rocco’s assistant Jaquino. Fidelio will be heard live over the Toll Brothers-Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network at 12:00 p.m. CT on Saturday, April 1.
