James Farmer, Jr: The Great Debater is Focus of Event at Wiley College Friday

BEN FARMER JR: THE GREAT DEBATER - Ben Voth an associate professor and director of debate at Southern Methodist University in Dallas will be the featured speaker at the conclusion of Wiley College's second debate camp Friday at 1:30 pm at the Freeman Hodge Hall on the Wiley College Campus in Marshall, Texas.  Voth is a longtime admirer of James Farmer, Jr who graduated from Wiley College in 1938 and was a member of the famed college's debate team depicted in the film "The Great Debaters" directed by Denzel Washington.  Voth has written a book titled "James Farmer Junior: The Great Debater" and the focus of his presentation will be how Farmer's education at Wiley College was transformative in that it laid the bedrock of what was to become the modern civil rights movement in America long before Martin Luther King, Jr.

Chuck Smith brings more than 30 years' broadcast and media experience to Red River Radio. He began his career as a radio news reporter and transitioned to television journalism and newsmagazine production. Chuck studied mass communications at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia and motion picture / television production at the University of California at Los Angeles. He has also taught writing for television at York Technical College in Rock Hill, South Carolina and video / film production at Centenary College of Louisiana, Shreveport.
