Centenary student plans maker's faire, denounces bullying

Kate Archer Kent

A Centenary College student has organized a maker's faire Saturday in recognition of National Day of Silence. The student-led event denounces bullying in connection with sexual orientation or gender identity. Sara Whittington, a sociology major from Pineville, La., wanted to organize a creative outlet to mark the day. Whittington said 23 vendors will sell their handmade goods.

“I’m one of those people who likes to dream big," Whittington said. "I don’t understand why we can’t do the big shebang just because tradition is the little shebang? I really wanted to do a maker's faire. People were behind me. It sounded fun. So, there we go.”

Whittington is involved in Centenary’s student organization called Outreach. She says it works like a support group.

“If you’re just having a rough day and you just want to say, You know, this really mean person in my class did this really mean thing and I’m just going to tell you guys about it. This is how I handled it, and here's some advice for people who go through the same things on a regular basis and how to handle it. It was really helpful my freshman year," Whittington said.

The Outreach maker’s faire will be held Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Centenary’s Jones Rice Field. Whittington called it a preview to the Texas Avenue Makers Fair on April 27 that will draw more than 160 vendors.
