Newport Jazz Festival: The Joey DeFrancesco Trio In Concert

Joey DeFrancesco

Airs Monday, October 28 at 8 p.m.  The Hammond B-3 organ maestro performed at the Newport Jazz Festival on August 6. This is an unhosted music-only set. If you use it, please credit Newark's WBGO, Boston's WGBH and NPR Music for the recording. Available for free to NPR member stations. Not much in jazz combines the churchy moan and shaking hip quite like a Hammond B-3 organ. And Joey DeFrancesco is one of its modern masters — he grew up around the instrument since birth (his father is also a jazz organist), cut his first major-label album in his teens and has been honing his innate swing instincts since then. He's 40 now, and will celebrate with an eponymous album in September; at Newport, he brings a soulful trio to the Harbor Stage. Recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival on Saturday, August 6, 2011

The Band

The Band: Live at the Academy of Music

Airs Friday, October 25 at 10 p.m.  For this hour-long special, The Band co-founder and songwriter Robbie Robertson sits down with host Mike Etchart for a candid, insightful and revealing conversation on the behind-the-scenes history and dynamics of the group, and the inspiration and stories of some of their best known songs, like "The Weight", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and many others that are interspersed throughout the program. Robbie also discusses the original influences of The Band and their music, and why their sound continues to influence contemporary groups like The Lumineers and Mumford & Sons.  Before there was "Americana".......there was The Band.
