LaPREP continues to improve educational outcomes for Shreveport middle schoolers

LSU Shreveport’s LaPREP – a rigorous summer academic program – came to an end yesterday as 49 middle school students walked across the stage at LSUS's University Center Theater to acknowledge two summers of intensive work in math, science, engineering and technical writing covering material well beyond their years. Graduate Nizheala Parrott is entering eighth grade, and she summed up her experiences in an essay she delivered at the ceremony.

Robeline, La., racer vying to be the next stock car star

The Robeline Rocket -- aka Caleb Dillard, 18, of Robeline, La., -- is one of nine finalists competing in the PEAK Stock Car Dream Challenge that wraps up today in Charlotte, N.C. Dillard is going through a three-day test behind the wheel of different race cars on a variety of courses. He’s the reigning champion of Sabine Motor Speedway in Many, La. 

Hundreds of aspiring stock car drivers applied to be in the challenge that boasts coaching from Danika Patrick, and the ability to hobnob with potential sponsors. Dillard’s entry consisted of a home video shot in his race car garage.

East Texas nonprofit trains service dogs for people with diabetes and autism

Ten families from California to New York will gather later this month at Lake Sam Rayburn in Brookeland, Texas, to meet their newest family members. Ten British Labradors have finished a year of training to become certified diabetic alert dogs. They alert Type 1 diabetics when their blood sugar level is in a dangerous range. If not properly monitored, a diabetic can quickly become ill to the point of critical condition.
