Northwestern State student lands internship studying BP oil spill at Columbia University

A Northwestern State University student is preparing for a prestigious summer internship at the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University in New York. Christina Palomo of Los Angeles will travel from Natchitoches to New York later this month to help Columbia scientists study the environmental consequences of the 2010 BP oil spill. The biology major said she’ll work alongside two geochemists.

Northwestern State piano series features "From the Top" host

Pianist Christopher O’Riley, the host of the NPR music program “From the Top,” will perform Saturday, March 23, at Northwestern State University as part of its Louisiana Piano Series International. O’Riley is finishing up a three-year residency at LSU School of Music. Northwestern State associate professor of music Christine Burczyk Allen said the series brings in big artists, and it just so happens that this one wasn’t too far away.

NSU professor: Wikipedia is a useful starting point for research

The head of the first-year writing program at Northwestern State University has designed a writing curriculum around Wikipedia. The site relies on volunteer contributors to write and edit articles. Some academics downplay its relevance as a research tool.

Assistant professor of English Thomas Reynolds is writing a book on how professors should use Wikipedia in academic research and writing classrooms. Reynolds says the ultimate goal is for his students to write an article that passes muster and gets published.

Yarn bombers target Natchitoches telephone pole

Art students at Northwestern State University have installed another yarn bomb in Natchitoches. NSU assistant professor of art Leslie Gruesbeck said the students made a proposal to the mayor to get permission to cover a telephone pole with a brightly-colored crocheted wrap, like a sweater. This is the sixth yarn bomb her students have completed. She said several fiber classes crocheted different pieces for the latest installation in Tricentennial Park.
