Oakland Cemetery in Shreveport gets long overdue TLC

Restoration projects are under way at Shreveport’s oldest municipal cemetery. A ceremony was held Friday to recognize the work to be done on roads and walkways in Oakland Cemetery made possible by a $279,000 bond issue approved by voters in 2011. The dollars won’t cover all the work that needs to be done on the cemetery that dates back to 1847.

Shreveport mayor Cedric Glover recalls first visiting Oakland on a field trip at age 14. He said many city administrations have wanted to do capital projects, but it’s never been the most pressing priority.

Film crews descend on Shreveport preparing Louisiana Film Prize entries

Over the past few weeks, a number of small film crews have taken to the streets of Shreveport. They’ve been shooting all around northwest Louisiana, like in a vacant former restaurant in the Highland neighborhood. They’re making short films – that must be shot locally – to enter into this year’s Louisiana Film Prize contest.

Robinson's Rescue receives grant to control feral cats in Shreveport

Feral cats roaming in one Shreveport neighborhood will be able to be fixed for free through a new grant program. Robinson’s Rescue, a Shreveport nonprofit organization that provides free and low-cost spay/neuter services, announced it launched a new Free Feral Cat Program made possible through a grant from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Shreveport memorial honors hometown Navy SEALs

Two Shreveport Navy SEALs who died when their Chinook helicopter came under enemy fire in Afghanistan in 2011 are now permanently memorialized in the city’s Riverview Park.

Lt. Cmdr. Jonas Kelsall and Chief Petty Officer Robert Reeves, both 32, rose to the most elite force – Seal Team 6 – which is known for killing Osama Bin Laden. At the dedication ceremony, Reeves’ father, Jim, said they were patriots with unfailing loyalty to country and each other.

Shreveport teen wins top award from Intel

A Harvard University-bound Caddo Magnet High School graduate delivered his commencement speech via a taped video last week. Henry Lin, 17, of Shreveport missed graduation because he was receiving the Intel Foundation Young Scientist Award at the world’s largest high school science research fair, a week-long event held in Phoenix. Lin received a $50,000 scholarship and $8,000 in cash for his astrophysics project that explores far-off and ancient cluster galaxies.
